Sammanfattning : The preconditions for Swedish MPs’ (Members of Parliament) loyalty to their parliamentary party groups have been modified by two recent constitutional changes: the introduction of preference voting in the electoral system in 1998, and the 1997 reorganisation of the national budgetary process. Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to map and assess the organisational and ideological development of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform party, the ELDR. More specifically, it seeks to analyse the degree of integration between the members of the ELDR over time, to identify factors that may or may not generate integration, to relate the development of the ELDR to earlier research about European parties, and finally to contribute to the ongoing debate about whether or not the traditional national party families are about to establish parties at the European level. 5. Democratisation, Traditional Leadership and Reform Politics in South Africa
Sammanfattning : The aim of this study of democratisation and traditional leadership in South Africa is to understand why government efforts to democratise areas under traditional leadership surprisingly resulted in the maintenance of certain aspects of hereditary rule in official governance. Theory suggests that the answer is found in a dilemma faced by politicians, as they have to undertake reform with a view to advance four potentially contradictory political goals: democracy, state efficiency, state unity and, finally, re-election.
