  1. 16. Quasiparticles in the Quantum Hall Effect

    Författare :Janik Kailasvuori; Thors Hans Hansson; Jan Myrheim; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantum Hall effect; quasiparticles; noncommutative Chern-Simons theory; nonabelian statistics; thin torus; p-wave superconductivity; topology; index theory; effective gauge fields; Condensed matter physics; Kondenserade materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), discovered in 1982 in a two-dimensional electron system, has generated a wealth of successful theory and new concepts in condensed matter physics, but is still not fully understood. The possibility of having nonabelian quasiparticle statistics has recently attracted attention on purely theoretical grounds but also because of its potential applications in topologically protected quantum computing. 2. 17. Hidden patterns that matter : statistical methods for analysis of DNA and RNA data

    Författare :Therese Kellgren; Patrik Rydén; Sara Sjöstedt de Luna; Rebecka Jörnsten; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genome; Next-generation sequence; statistics; microarrays; bacteria; antibiotic resistance; inherited diseases; Co-expression networks; centralization within subgroups;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding how the genetic variations can affect characteristics and function of organisms can help researchers and medical doctors to detect genetic alterations that cause disease and reveal genes that causes antibiotic resistance. The opportunities and progress associated with such data come however with challenges related to statistical analysis. LÄS MER

  3. 18. New horizons in string theory : bubble babble in search of darkness

    Författare :Suvendu Giri; Ulf Danielsson; Bert Vercnocke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; String theory; black holes; dark energy; de Sitter; cosmological constant; M-theory; braneworld; anti de Sitter; Theoretical Physics; Teoretisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : It was discovered nearly two decades ago that we live in an accelerating universe that is dominated by dark energy. Understanding the origin of such an energy has turned out to be a very difficult open question in physics, and calls on the need for a fundamental theory like string theory. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Insights into Materials Properties from Ab Initio Theory : Diffusion, Adsorption, Catalysis & Structure

    Författare :Andreas Blomqvist; Rajeev Ahuja; Christopher Wolverton; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Density functional theory; Molecular dynamics; Diffusion; Catalysis; Adsorption; Random structure search; Hydrogen-storage materials; Phase-change materials; Defects and diffusion; Defekter och diffusion; Surfaces and interfaces; Ytor och mellanytor; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and DFT based ab initio molecular dynamics simulations have been employed in order to gain insights into materials properties like diffusion, adsorption, catalysis, and structure. In transition metals, absorbed hydrogen atoms self-trap due to localization of metal d-electrons. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Theory and Application of the Mechanics of Graphene Sheets

    Författare :Juan Atalaya; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Graphene; Elasticity Theory; Nonlinear Dynamics and NEM-based Mass Spectrometry.;

    Sammanfattning : Starting from an atomistic approach, I derive a hierarchy of successively more simplified continuum elasticity descriptions for modeling the mechanical properties of suspended graphene sheets. It is shown that graphene sheets with clamped edges have an intrinsic nonlinear mechanical response due to a variable tension induced by stretching. LÄS MER
