1. Extreme Value Analysis of Huge Datasets: Tail Estimation Methods in High-Throughput Screening and Bioinformatics
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents results in Extreme Value Theory with applications to High-Throughput Screening and Bioinformatics. The methods described here, however, are applicable to statistical analysis of huge datasets in general. The main results are covered in four papers. LÄS MER
2. Effect of environmental factors on bacterioplankton community composition, diversity and functionality
Sammanfattning : The ocean covers more than 70 % of the Earth surface and represents the largest ecosystem on Earth. Bacteria are an important part of the marine food web not only in remineralisation but also since they utilize dissolved organic matter (DOM) and make the energy available to higher trophic levels. 3. Approximation of Infinitely Divisible Random Variables with Application to the Simulation of Stochastic Processes
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers A, B, C and D. Paper A and B treats the simulation of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The research presented therein was triggered by the fact that there were not any efficient implementations of the higher order methods for simulating SDEs. LÄS MER
4. Cyclotides evolve : Studies on their natural distribution, structural diversity, and activity
Sammanfattning : The cyclotides are a family of naturally occurring peptides characterized by cyclic cystine knot (CCK) structural motif, which comprises a cyclic head-to-tail backbone featuring six conserved cysteine residues that form three disulfide bonds. This unique structural motif makes cyclotides exceptionally resistant to chemical, thermal and enzymatic degradation. LÄS MER
5. The Principle of Scaling of Geographic Space and its Application in Urban Studies
Sammanfattning : Geographic space is the large-scale and continuous space that encircles the earth and in which human activities occur. The study of geographic space has drawn attention in many different fields and has been applied in a variety of studies, including those on cognition, urban planning and navigation systems. LÄS MER
