  1. 6. Engineering cytosolic acetyl-CoA metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Författare :Yiming Zhang; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; reverse engineering; flavodoxin; genomic DNA sequencing; ferredoxin; histone deacetylase; adaptive evolution; ferredoxin flavodoxin NADP reductase; pyruvate decarboxylase; citrate synthase; hexose transporter; yeast; mitochondria; aerobic growth; metabolic engineering.; acetyl-CoA; central carbon metabolism;

    Sammanfattning : A Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain carrying deletions in all three pyruvate decarboxylase genes (also called Pdc negative yeast) represents a non-ethanol producing platform strain for biochemical production. However, it cannot grow on glucose as the sole carbon source due to the lack of cytosolic acetyl-CoA for lipid biosynthesis. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Low-Carbon City Initiatives in China : Planning Approaches, Dilemmas and Opportunities

    Författare :Guanghong Zhou; Björn Frostell; Karel Mulder; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Low-carbon city; Urban planning; Metabolic approach; Industrial Ecology; Industriell ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, tackle climate change and move toward sustainable development, the central government in China has proposed low-carbon city development as the national strategy and relevant initiatives have been taken by local governments. This thesis analyses current low-carbon city programmes and planning approaches in China, identifies limitations and proposes a metabolic approach that could be used to account for physical resources, monitor GHG emissions and involve stakeholders in the planning process. 3. 8. To “leaf” or not to “leaf” : Understanding the metabolic adjustments associated with leaf senescence

    Författare :Daria Chrobok; Olivier Keech; Per Gardeström; David Macherel; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; metabolism; mitochondria; senescence; biology; biologi;

    Sammanfattning : The adequate execution of the final developmental stage of a leaf, leaf senescence, is crucial to the long-term survival of the plant. During senescence cellular structures like membranes, proteins, lipids and macromolecules are degraded and released nutrients are relocated to developing parts of the plant, such as young leaves, stems, flowers, siliques and ultimately seeds that are dependent on this nutrient remobilization. 4. 9. Evolution of Yeast Respiro-Fermentative Lifestyle and the Underlying Mechanisms Behind Aerobic Fermentation

    Författare :Arne Hagman; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crabtree effect; aerobic fermentation; respiro-fermentation; ethanol production; yeast; central carbon metabolism; evolution of alternative lifestyles;

    Sammanfattning : Under aerobic conditions, most yeasts such as Kluyveromyces lactis, prefer the respiratory pathway and some, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae prefer less energy efficient fermentative pathway for their energy metabolism. These two metabolic strategies are also known as Crabtree negative and Crabtree positive respectively, and the evolution of the latter has lately been explained by the “make-accumulate-consume” life strategy. 5. 10. Diet and gastrointestinal cancer : one-carbon metabolism and other aspects

    Författare :Susanna C Larsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Diet has been hypothesized to play a major role in the etiology of gastrointestinal cancer, but the specific dietary factors involved remain unclear. The aims of this thesis were: to examine the associations of dietary magnesium and vitamin B6 intakes with risk of colorectal cancer in the Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC); to evaluate the relation between folate intake and risk of pancreatic cancer in the SMC and the Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM); to use metaanalysis to summarize the evidence from published studies of the associations of folate intake and polymorphisms in the gene encoding 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T and A1298C), a central enzyme in one-carbon metabolism, with risk of esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer; and to perform a meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies of the relationship between processed meat consumption and risk of gastric cancer.
