16. Fish Lenses : Anatomy and Optics
Sammanfattning : I have investigated some of the biological regulatory mechanisms governing the development of crystalline lenses. I used fish as model animals because they possess optically interesting lenses, while the geometrical simplicity of fish lenses allows for studies that are difficult or impossible with the lenses of other animals. 17. Artificial blood vessels - Studies on endothelial cell and blood interactions with bacterial cellulose
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are still the number one cause of death or invalidity in the western world today. Atherosclerotic plaques and restenosis can result in severe occlusions of peripheral and coronary arteries. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease and includes drug therapy and bypass surgery. LÄS MER
18. Computational modelling in systems biology: from rewriting cell fates to detecting tumours
Sammanfattning : Computational modelling is becoming an increasingly important tool in biological research. By performing computer simulations of models, it becomes possible to test theories about a biological system against experimental data. Simulations can also be used as a replacement for experiments otherwise unattainable. LÄS MER
19. Single cell studies of natural killer cell immune surveillance
Sammanfattning : Our immune system protects us from microbes such as viruses, bacteria and parasitic worms. The immune system also plays a key role in fighting cancer and in carrying out a function termed ‘immune surveillance’, natural killer (NK) cells patrol tissues and participate in the elimination of transformed cells and established tumors. 20. Stem cell transplantation and regeneration after dorsal root avulsion
Sammanfattning : Spinal root avulsion leads to paralysis and loss of sensory function. Surgical methods can improve motor function and ameliorate pain but sensory recovery in adults is poor. Previous studies have shown that cell transplantation or treatment with trophic factors can improve functional outcome in rodents after dorsal root transection or crush. LÄS MER
