6. From behaviour to genes: anti-predator responses of brown trout (Salmo trutta) under winter conditions
Sammanfattning : Temperature has major effects on the performance of poikilotherms. In encounters with predators, low winter temperatures constrain predator detection and escape capabilities in prey fishes. LÄS MER
7. Neuroendocrinology of agonostic interaction and social signalling in Artic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) : Studies on the neuroendocrine regulation of aggressive behaviour, stress responses and skin colour
Sammanfattning : This thesis shows that socially subordinate Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) display elevated brain serotonergic (5-HT) and norepinephric activity along with a chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, including elevated plasma concentrations of á-MSH. Furthermore, subordinate fish showed an inhibition of aggressive behaviour and darker body coloration, skin darkness being positively correlated with plasma á-MSH. LÄS MER
8. Salmonid behaviour under winter conditions
Sammanfattning : Winter conditions are believed to play an important role in the population dynamics of northern temperate stream fish, challenging the ability of fish to physiologically and behaviourally adapt. Climate change is predicted to increase both mean temperature and temperature fluctuations, especially during winter, leading to dynamic environmental conditions in terms of river ice production and flow. 9. Behavioural and Neuroendocrine Effects of Stress in Salmonid Fish
Sammanfattning : Stress can affect several behavioural patterns, such as food intake and the general activity level of an animal. The central monoamine neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are important in the mediation of both behavioural and neuroendocrine stress effects. LÄS MER
