1. Importance of serotonin-related candidate genes for human behaviour
Sammanfattning : Family and twin studies have been consistent in demonstrating that genetic factors are involved in the etiology of most major psychiatric disorders, as well as in various normal personality traits. Mostly due to the efficacy of serotonin-acting drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), the neurotransmitter serotonin has been implicated in a variety of common psychiatric disorders, including depression, a spectrum of anxiety disorders, and premenstrual dysphoria; moreover, some studies have suggested that also personality is influenced by serotonin. 2. Obsessive-compulsive disorder, serotonin and oxytocin : treatment response and side effects
Sammanfattning : Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), with a prevalence of 1-2 %, frequently leads a chronic course. Persons with OCD are often reluctant to seek help and, if they do, their OCD is often missed. This is unfortunate, since active treatment may substantially improve social function and quality of life. LÄS MER
3. Serotonin in Fear and Anxiety
Sammanfattning : That the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) has a central role in fear and anxiety is supported by numerous experimental and clinical studies. Arguably the most illustrative example is the effect of serotonergic-acting drugs, and in particular the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), in the treatment of anxiety disorders. 4. 5-HT2A : a serotonin receptor with a possible role in joint diseases
Sammanfattning : BackgroundSerotonin (5-HT), an amino acid derivative and neurotransmitter, has for long been studied in relation to inflammation. It is an endogenous ligand for several different types of serotonin receptors. The serotonin receptor 5-HT2A has been reported to have a role in the pathophysiology of arthritis in animal experiment models. LÄS MER
5. Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors in the environment : Effects of citalopram on fish behaviour
Sammanfattning : Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a class of anxiolytic and anti-depressant drugs. SSRIs act on the evolutionarily ancient serotonergic system which is virtually identical throughout the vertebrate phylum. LÄS MER
