1. The Impact of Nandrolone Decanoate on Neuropeptidergic Mechanisms Related to Cognition, Aggression, Reward and Dependence
Sammanfattning : The abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) is becoming increasingly common and may result in a range of physiological as well as psychological effects such as altered behavior in terms of increased aggression, cognitive dysfunction and addictive behavior. AAS comprise testosterone and its derivatives, of which nandrolone is one of the more common. LÄS MER
2. Transcriptional dysregulation in L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia
Sammanfattning : This study explores the role of transcriptional regulation important in the development of L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease. In patients with Parkinson’s disease, dyskinesia is one of the most difficult complications of the DA-replacement therapy by L-DOPA. LÄS MER
3. Mechanisms of Prodynorphin Gene Dysregulation in the Brain of Human Alcoholics
Sammanfattning : The endogenous opioid system (EOS) including dynorphin opioid peptides and κ-opioid receptor (KOR) plays a critical role in alcohol dependence. Aims of the thesis were to evaluate whether the EOS undergoes molecular adaptations in brain areas involved in cognitive control of addiction in human alcohol dependent subjects, and to analyze the impact of genetic and epigenetic factors on these adaptive changes. 4. Genes that modulate or mediate dopaminergic neurotransmission : expression of the human prodynorphin gene and association studies with candidate genes in an alcohol patient sample
Sammanfattning : The development of alcoholism may at least partly be attributed to the effect of ethanol on reward and reinforcement. As a genetic influence in the vulnerability to alcoholism and drug abuse has been documented, it is of interest to investigate genes active in brain structures which mediate reward and reinforcement. 5. Cocaine effects on striatal dynorphin and CART neuropeptides : association to mood disorder
Sammanfattning : People take cocaine to elevate mood, but with repeated use and subsequent development of dependence, in paradox, a negative mood state is induced. This may be one reason for the strong comorbidity between cocaine dependence and mood disorders. A common substrate implicated in both disorders is the neurotransmitter dopamine. LÄS MER
