1. Deep Perceptual Loss and Similarity
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates deep perceptual loss and (deep perceptual) similarity; methods for computing loss and similarity for images as the distance between the deep features extracted from neural networks. The primary contributions of the thesis consist of (i) aggregating much of the existing research on deep perceptual loss and similarity, and (ii) presenting novel research into understanding and improving the methods. 2. Geometric Models of Similarity
Sammanfattning : This dissertation examines and discusses some phenomena related to the geometric representation of similarity. It takes its inspiration from the existing body of empirical research within the fields of perceptual and cognitive psychology, but also connects to certain areas of machine learning. LÄS MER
3. When similarity qualifies as a sign : a study in picture understanding and semiotic development in young children
Sammanfattning : The general goal of this thesis is to elucidate children’s early understandings of pictorial meanings, and how one can know anything about them. My central aim is to explore how picture comprehension develops during children’s first 3 years of life, through semiotic-theory-derived analyses of meaning relations. LÄS MER

5. A Combined Perceptual and Acoustical Account of US Dialect Distance
Sammanfattning : This study examines the influence of attitudinal, perceptual, and acoustic factors on the categorization of US dialects by comparing acoustic-vocalic and perceived accent distances. The results of native and non-native listeners’ perceived distances between US regional accents are investigated in light of how acoustic-phonetic markers, attitudinal judgments, and identifiability may together impact how similar or different accents are perceived to be.
