16. The inflammatory response to arterial injury
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis as a disease is postulated to stem from a response to injury of the arterial wall by various stimuli. The inflammatory response is proposed to mediate intimal formation after injury. One pathway of cellular response to injury is through transcription factor NF-kB. LÄS MER
17. Effects of lipid oxidation on transcriptional regulation and cell death
Sammanfattning : Elevated levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in plasma are associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis. Excessive accumulation of lipoproteins and lipids in the vascular wall is thought to lead to the development of advanced atherosclerotic lesions prone to rupture. LÄS MER
18. Inflammatory response and intervention in experimental acute pancreatitis
Sammanfattning : Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease where underlying mechanisms for the local initiating events in the pancreas, the systemic dissemination of the inflammatory response and remote organ dysfunction still are unclear. The overall aim of the thesis was to study mechanisms of the inflammatory response in AP with special emphasis on local, systemic, and distant organ injury directed at different signalling pathways, and potential therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of inflammation and cell injury following AP. 19. Molecular studies of the humoral immune response in Hyalophora cecropia : structure, function and transcriptional regulation of three classes of immunoresponsive genes
Sammanfattning : Insects have an efficient humoral immune system, an important part of which is constituted by the antibacterial proteins, produced upon bacterial infection or wounding. In this thesis, the molecular mechanism of this immune response was investigated in the giant silkmoth Hyalophora cecropia, where a set of bacteriainducible proteins (immune proteins) had previously been characterized. 20. Investigating mechanisms of angiogenesis in health and disease using zebrafish models
Sammanfattning : Angiogenesis, the growth of blood vessels from an existing vasculature, can occur by sprouting from preexisting vessels or by vessel splitting (intussusception). Pathological angiogenesis drives choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in age related macular degeneration (AMD) which is commonly restricted under the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), called occult CNV, but may also involve vessels penetrating through the RPE into the sub-retinal space.
