  1. 6. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and cancer : epidemiological and immunohistochemical studies on SLE patients with malignant lymphoma or myeloid leukaemia

    Författare :Björn Lövström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Malignancy as a cause of death was reported in occasional SLE patients, but the question whether patients with SLE have an increased risk of developing cancer compared to the general population has remained unanswered. To address this question, we created a national Swedish SLE cohort from the Hospital Discharge Register where all patients with an SLE diagnosis between 1964 and 1994 were included. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Where are the world’s disease patterns heading? : The challenges of epidemiological transition

    Författare :Ailiana Santosa; Peter Byass; Ulf Högberg; Joacim Rocklöv; Sarah Wild; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; epidemiological transition; premature mortality; non-communicable disease; risk factors; Sweden; low-and middle-income countries; INDEPTH Network; Västerbotten Intervention Programme; Public health; folkhälsa;

    Sammanfattning : INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological transition theory, first postulated by Omran in 1971, provides a useful framework for understanding cause-specific mortality changes and may contribute usefully to predictions about cause-specific mortality. However, understandings of mortality transitions and associated epidemiological changes remain poorly defined for public health practitioners due to lack of evidence from low- and middle-income countries. 3. 8. The new old normal : reassessing perioperative oxygen consumption and haemodynamics in the elderly

    Författare :Julia Jakobsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Perioperative haemodynamic instability and disturbances of global oxygen transport are associated with complications and organ injury after surgery. The continuously growing population of elderly in surgical care are at higher risk due to age-related cardiovascular alterations and increased prevalence of comorbidities. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Carers to people with Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer's disease : experiences and coping strategies

    Författare :Ellen J Svendsboe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate and describe the experience of carers to people with different types of dementia, in particular Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and how they cope with their situation. The project comprises four studies. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Diet and gastrointestinal cancer : one-carbon metabolism and other aspects

    Författare :Susanna C Larsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Diet has been hypothesized to play a major role in the etiology of gastrointestinal cancer, but the specific dietary factors involved remain unclear. The aims of this thesis were: to examine the associations of dietary magnesium and vitamin B6 intakes with risk of colorectal cancer in the Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC); to evaluate the relation between folate intake and risk of pancreatic cancer in the SMC and the Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM); to use metaanalysis to summarize the evidence from published studies of the associations of folate intake and polymorphisms in the gene encoding 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T and A1298C), a central enzyme in one-carbon metabolism, with risk of esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer; and to perform a meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies of the relationship between processed meat consumption and risk of gastric cancer.
