1. An experimental study on the interaction between the neuro-endocrine and immune systems in the gastrointestinal tract
Sammanfattning : The mucosa lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is in immediate contact with food nutrients to allow a rapid and efficient digestion and absorption and at the same time protects against the incessant risk of attack from pathogenic microbes. Maintenance of normal physiological activities in the GI tract is dependent on a number of regulatory interactions between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, as well as environmental and genetic factors. 2. Genetic Aspects of Environmental Disturbances in Marine Ecosystems : Studies of the Blue Mussel in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : Anthropogenic environmental changes can serve as drivers for evolutionary responses in wild populations. To predict the long-term impact of anthropogenic changes on populations, it is crucial to understand the genetic effects caused by these disturbances. LÄS MER
3. Innate and adaptive cellular immunity in chronic HCV and HIV-1 infection
Sammanfattning : Viral infections are initially countered by an innate immune response as a first line of defence followed by an adaptive immune response. However, certain viruses successfully evade cellular immune responses and establish chronic infection. LÄS MER
4. Gastro-intestinal toxicity related to haemopoietic stem cell transplantation with a special focus on the intestinal barrier function
Sammanfattning : The myeloablative, cytotoxic therapy (conditioning treatment) prior to haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has the combined purpose of eliminating leukaemic or cancer cells located in the bone marrow or elsewhere in the body and, in the allogeneic setting, of suppressing the immune response of the recipient to prevent marrow rejection. The unwanted effect is the inevitable elimination of normal, haemopoietic stem cells, a lethal effect which is circumvented by the following administration of haemopoietic stem cells from the patient (autologous HSCT) or from a related or an unrelated donor (allogeneic HSCT). 5. Comparative bioinformatics analyses of transcriptome and epigenome data using bovine model systems
Sammanfattning : Bioinformatics methodology is used to understand complex biological processes in molecular biology, genetics and epigenetics. This thesis performed analysis of the complex biological processes controlling reproduction in mammals including dairy cattle. LÄS MER
