  1. 1. Medical Treatment and Grading of Bell's Palsy

    Författare :Thomas Berg; Mats Holmström; Lars Jonsson; Mats Engström; Dan Bagger-Sjöbäck; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bell s palsy; facial grading; prednisolone; valaciclovir; Sunnybrook; House-Brackmann; Yanagihara; last observation carried forward; complete-case analysis; Otorhinolaryngology; Otorhinolaryngologi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of prednisolone and valaciclovir in a large number of Bell's palsy patients. The incidence and intensity of pain around the ear, in the face or in the neck during the first two months of palsy, and its prognostic value, was also assessed. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Magnetic resonance imaging, electroneurographic, and clinical findings in Bell's palsy

    Författare :Mats Engström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Bell s palsy; facial nerve; magnetic resonance imaging; gadolinium; electroneurography; clinical grading; neurapraxia; nerve degeneration; prognostication; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; oto-rhino-laryngologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seventy-two patients were examined in order to learn more about the pathophysiology of Bell's palsy and to assess the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as electroneurographic and clinical tests in predicting the outcome in patients with this disease.In 12 of 20 patients (60%) an increased signal intensity in the paranasal sinuses was evident on T2-weighted MRI scans in the early stage of palsy, and in six of the positive patients the high signal intensity had disappeared by the time of the follow-up examination. 3. 3. Bell's palsy : study design, prognosis and quality-of-life

    Författare :Elin Marsk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Bell’s palsy is an acute peripheral facial nerve dysfunction with unknown etiology, causing weakness or paralysis of the mimic muscles of the face. The disease can cause disfigurement of the face, impair the ability to eat, drink and speak, and seriously affect the patient’s quality of life. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Bell's Palsy - Medical Treatment and Influence of Prognostic Factors

    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bell’s palsy; Treatment; Recovery; Prognostic factors; Prednisolone; Valaciclovir; Facial grading; Sunnybrook;

    Sammanfattning : Bell’s palsy is an acute onset of peripheral facial nerve dysfunction. Despite extensive research the aetiology is unclear. The most prevailing theory is that reactivation of viruses such as Herpes simplex type-1 or Varicella zoster may cause Bell’s palsy. LÄS MER
