  1. 1. High-Performance Finite Element Methods : with Application to Simulation of Diffusion MRI and Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

    Författare :Van-Dang Nguyen; Johan Hoffman; Johan Jansson; Axel Målqvist; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; High performance finite element method; computational diffusion MRI; turbulent flow; vertical axis wind turbine.; Computer Science; Datalogi;

    Sammanfattning : The finite element methods (FEM) have been developed over decades, and together with the growth of computer engineering, they become more and more important in solving large-scale problems in science and industry. The objective of this thesis is to develop high-performance finite element methods (HP-FEM), with two main applications in mind: computational diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and simulation of the turbulent flow past a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). 2. 2. High Performance Adaptive Finite Element Methods : With Applications in Aerodynamics

    Författare :Niclas Jansson; Johan Hoffman; Johan Jansson; Vincent Heuveline; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The massive computational cost for resolving all scales in a turbulent flow makes a direct numerical simulation of the underlying Navier-Stokes equations impossible in most engineering applications. Recent advances in adaptive finite element methods offer a new powerful tool in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). LÄS MER

  3. 3. High Order Symmetric Finite Difference Schemes for the Acoustic Wave Equation

    Författare :Abraham Zemui; Bertil Gustafsson; Leif Abrahamsson; Per Weinerfelt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; finite element method; mass lumping; high order; finite difference method; wave equation; Numerical Analysis; Numerisk analys;

    Sammanfattning : When someone speaks, or when a piano is played, sound waves are spread through the room. Physically the propagation of sound is governed by the acoustic wave equation. This thesis deals with the problem of finding solutions to this equation by numerical methods. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Slotless High-Performance Electric Drives : Harmonic Loss Analysis, Sensorless Control, and Inverter Design

    Författare :Jonas Millinger; Oskar Wallmark; Juliette Soulard; Zi-Qiang Zhu; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Finite-element analysis; harmonic losses; sensorless control; slotless motor drives; thermal modeling; wide-bandgap inverter; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Electric motor drives are a cornerstone for many fundamental functions in today’s society, and their expected dominance within the transport sector is considered one of the main keys to abate global warming. Subsequently, the incentives for improved performance of electric motor drives cannot be sufficiently emphasized. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Fluid Structure Interaction Problems with Applications to Human Phonation

    Författare :Niyazi Cem Degirmenci; Johan Hoffman; Johan Jansson; David Nordsletten; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fluid Structure Interaction; Finite Element Method; Contact Modeling; Acoustic Coupling; High Performance Computing; Tillämpad matematik och beräkningsmatematik; Applied and Computational Mathematics;

    Sammanfattning : This work presents a unified framework for numerical solution of Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) and acoustics problems with focus on human phonation. The Finite Element Method is employed for numerical investigation of partial differential equations that model conservation of momentum and mass. LÄS MER
