  1. 1. Frame dynamics and stakeholders in risk governance

    Författare :Beatrice Bengtsson; Research Policy Institute (RPI); []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; GMOs; framing; EU; stakeholders; expertise; governance rationalities; policy; feed; boundary framing; frame extension; intertextuality; food chain; participation; EFSA; DG SANCO; risk assessment; risk management; threshold; risks.;

    Sammanfattning : The EU governance of food safety and GM food and feed has gone through significant changes since the BSE crisis and food scares during the 1990s. This work focuses on one particular new feature; the role of stakeholders representing the food chain: biotech associations, farmer organizations, food and feed processors, consumer organizations and environmental NGOs. 2. 2. Prior informed consent and hazardous trade : Regulating trade in hazardous goods at the intersection of sovereignty, free trade and environmental protection

    Författare :David Langlet; Said Mahmoudi; Günther Handl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; informed consent; PIC; trade bans; effective sovereignty; environmental law; free-trade law; hazardous substances; wastes; chemicals; GMOs; Environmental law; Miljörätt; miljörätt; Environmental Law;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation analyses international and to some extent domestic law pertaining to trade in hazardous substances. Hazardous trade regulation is found to promote or accommodate three objectives in particular: the strengthening of the ability of (importing) States to exercise control of transboundary flows of hazardous substances; the protection of human health and environment; and the avoidance of impediments to the free flow of goods. Sammanfattning : The political discourse that has emerged as a consequence of establishing a European regulatory framework for GMOs has not been without problems. This dissertation addresses the political and regulatory challenges created by the development and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the EU. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Exploring beta-mannan acting glycosidase families in hydrolysis and mannosyl transfer

    Författare :Simon Birgersson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glycoside hydrolases; beta-mannanase; Transglycosylation; enzymatic synthesis; Enzyme synergy; enzyme engineering; MALDI-TOF; HPLC; NMR;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis revolves around the study of glycoside hydrolases (GH), specifically GH5 β-mannanases and GH36 α-galactosidase (I-III), as well as a GH130 mannoside phosphorylase (I, IV). These enzymes are investigated for their actions on and conversion of hemicellulosic β-mannan, including food-grade galactomannan and softwood galactoglucomannan, along with manno-oligosaccharides (MOS) derived from such polymers. 5. 5. A Discourse Perspective on the Learning of Biotechnology

    Författare :Anne Solli; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Discourse analysis; biotechnology; higher education; socio-scientific issues.;

    Sammanfattning : Analyses of how students and a professor in an introductory university biotechnology course justify and evaluate knowledge claims considering GM food are reported in this licentiate thesis. In the public discussion of Genetically Modified (GM) food the representations of science as a social good, conducted in the public interest to solve major problems are being subjected to intense scrutiny and questioning.
