    Sammanfattning : The aim was to study the epidemiology of chronic pain (> 3 months duration) and factors associated to pain prevalence, prognosis, health care and medication in a general population.     Sammanfattning : The present thesis gives an account of the scheduled transformation of a combined Hospital and Primary Health Care institution, Nosokomio Neapolis, in a semi-rural community on Crete to an integrated population health research and development (R&D) centre by relatively minor organisational updatings and focused scientific studies with academic and political support and supervision.
