  1. 1. Colorectal cancer and radiation response : The role of EGFR, AKT and cancer stem cell markers

    Författare :Sara Häggblad Sahlberg; Bo Stenerlöw; Bengt Glimelius; Marika Nestor; Torgny Stigbrand; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; colorectal cancer; radiation; AKT; EGFR; cancer stem cells; CD133; CD44; Biomedical Radiation Science; Biomedicinsk strålningsvetenskap; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär cellbiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Cell Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The primary treatment for colorectal cancer is surgery. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy, sometimes combined, are also frequently used to diminish recurrence risk. In response to radiation exposure, several cellular signaling cascades are activated to repair DNA breaks, prevent apoptosis and to keep the cells proliferating. LÄS MER

  2. 2. How could Christmas trees remain evergreen? : photosynthetic acclimation of Scots pine and Norway spruce needles during winter

    Författare :Pushan Bag; Stefan Jansson; Fransis Andre Wollman; Umeå universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Plants and other green organisms harvest sunlight by green chlorophyll pigments and covertit to chemical energy (sugars) and oxygen in a process called photosynthesis providing the foundation for life on Earth. Although it is unanimously believed that oceanic phytoplanktons are the main contributors to the global photosynthesis, the contribution of coniferous boreal forests distributed across vast regions of the northern hemisphere cannot be undermined. 3. 3. Radiation response in human cells : DNA damage formation, repair and signaling

    Författare :Ann-Sofie Gustafsson; Bo Stenerlöw; Andrzej Wojcik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA damage; DNA repair; DSB; NHEJ; DNA-PK; ionizing radiation; heat-labile sites; Biomedical Radiation Science; Biomedicinsk strålningsvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Ionizing radiation induces a range of different DNA lesions. In terms of mutation frequency and mammalian cell survival, the most critical of these lesions is the DNA double-strand break (DSB). DSB left unrepaired or mis-repaired may result in chromosomal aberrations that can lead to permanent genetic changes or cell death. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Oxidized nucleotides as a predictor of radiation sensitivity

    Författare :Ali Pour Khavari; Siamak Haghdoost; Marie Öhman; Anders Nilsson; Bo Stenerlöw; Neus Visa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 8-oxo-dG; Radiation; Sensitivity; Oxidized; Nucleotides; ROS; NOS; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : The direct and indirect effects of IR can lead to DNA damage and activation of DNA repair. The indirect effects of ionizing radiation mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) which produced through radiolysis of water and if not taken care of by the antioxidant system, can also give rise to oxidative stress. 5. 5. Long bone growth and evolution revealed by three-dimensional imaging

    Författare :Jordi Estefa; Sophie Sanchez; Per Ahlberg; Holly Woodward; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 3D histology; hematopoiesis; humerus; tetrapods; Biologi; Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Propagation phase-contrast synchrotron radiation microtomography is a non-destructive method used for studying histology in three dimensions (3D). Using it, the 3D organization of the diaphyseal cortical vascularization in the humerus of two seymouriamorphs was analyzed in this thesis. LÄS MER
