1. Diet and postmenopausal breast cancer - With a focus on low-grade inflammation
Sammanfattning : Diet-breast cancer studies have shown that “healthy eating patterns” are associated with decreased risk whereas unhealthy patterns (especially those including alcohol) are associated with increased risk, particularly in postmenopausal women. The potential mechanisms behind the observed associations are still under investigation. LÄS MER
2. Heterogeneity in Car Occupant Safety
Sammanfattning : This thesis ultimately aims to enhance occupant protection by incorporating aspects of real-world crash heterogeneity, often overlooked within current safety assessments. By investigating the effects of crash heterogeneity and broadening the comprehensiveness of occupant safety assessments, it seeks to support the development of more effective future vehicle safety systems. 3. Neck injuries in rear impacts : Dummy neck development, dummy evaluation and test condition specifications
Sammanfattning : The objective of the work underlying this thesis was firstly to develop a neck for a new rear impact dummy, to evaluate the complete dummy and to specify test conditions for a consumer test with attention to AIS 1 neck injuries in rear impacts. In the development of the dummy neck, a mathematical neck model was developed and evaluated. LÄS MER
4. Insulin resistance, genetic variation and cytokines : associations to myocardial infarction risk
Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance, inflammation and associated genes are considered as factors of potential importance for the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, but their relationship to myocardial infarction (MI) and associated risk factors remains unclear. In the present thesis, insulin resistance and serum levels as well as genetic variants of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), were investigated in the population-based study "the Stockholm heart epidemiological program" (SHEEP) (n=5452). 5. Development of Automated Algorithms for Epicardial Adipose Tissue Analysis in Computed Tomography and their Application in Population Based Research
Sammanfattning : The epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), which surrounds the heart and is separated from other tissues only by the thin layers of the pericardium, has enjoyed intense research for the past decades. Increased inflammatory activity in the EAT in coronary artery disease has, together with associated volumetric expansion of the EAT and changes in its radiodensity supported theories that the EAT might play a role in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis or mirror its progression better than traditional risk factors.
