6. Masters of War : The Role of Elites in Sudan’s Communal Conflicts
Sammanfattning : Why do communal conflicts turn violent in some regions but not in others? Communal conflicts pose a severe threat to human security and kill thousands of people each year, but our understanding of this phenomenon is still limited. In particular, we lack knowledge about why some of these conflicts become violent while others are resolved peacefully. LÄS MER
7. Early Cambrian Problematic Lophotrochozoans and Dilemmas of Scleritome Reconstructions
Sammanfattning : The emergence and radiation of metazoan body plans around the Precambrian/Cambrian boundary, some 500-600 million years ago, seems to be concordant with the appearance and diversification of preservable hard parts. Several Precambrian soft-bodied, multicellular organisms most likely represent stem-group bilaterians, but their fossil record is rather sparse. LÄS MER
8. Competitive performance prediction of elite alpine skiers
Sammanfattning : Introduction: The overall aim of this doctoral thesis was to identify physiological and anthropometric variables valid for prediction of competitive performance in alpine skiing (indicated by FIS points).Method: Paper I-III in this doctoral thesis followed an experimental, hypothesis-generating design which included both junior and senior elite alpine skiers. 10. Phylogenetic Relationships, Biogeography and Species Delimitation: A case study on southern African Silene (Caryophyllaceae)
Sammanfattning : The primary aim of this thesis was to explore the phylogenetic relationships and historical biogeography of African members of the plant genus Silene (Caryophyllaceae), with special focus on the eight native southern African taxa. Three loci (the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, and the rps16 and matK regions from the plastid genome) generated using traditional Sanger sequencing were used to infer the phylogenetic positions of African taxa, while sequence data from 28 low copy nuclear loci were generated using the target capture method to explore shallow phylogenetic relationships within southern African taxa.
