  1. 1. The diapause switch : Evolution of alternative developmental pathways in a butterfly

    Författare :Inger Marie Aalberg Haugen; Karl Gotthard; Dan Hahn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental plasticity; phenotypic plasticity; developmental switch; threshold trait; life-cycle regulation; direct development; Lepidoptera; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Diapause decision is a classic example of a threshold switch mechanism with cascading effects on morphology, behaviour and life-history traits. This thesis addresses the downstream effects of the insect diapause switch, with the main focus on pathway-specific regulation of life-history traits, using the speckled wood butterfly (Pararge aegeria) as a study species. 2. 2. Breeding for robust sows : association between leg conformation, fertility and sow stayability

    Författare :Thu Le Hong; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the possibility to breed for robust sows by improving the leg quality and conformation traits. The specific goals were to estimate the genetic correlations between leg conformation, reproduction and longevity in Swedish and Danish sows; and to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) as well as possible causal genes underlying leg conformation traits in pigs. 3. 3. Disruption of moth mating behaviour by olfactory and auditory cues

    Författare :Glenn Svensson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Djurekologi; ultrasound; predation risk; selection; heritability; flight tunnel; harmonic radar; pest control; mating disruption; pheromone communication; Pyralidae; Lepidoptera; Noctuidae; Animal ecology;

    Sammanfattning : The impact of olfactory and auditory cues on the mating behaviour in two species of moths, Agrotis segetum (Noctuidae) and Plodia interpunctella (Pyralidae), was investigated to evaluate their potential use in integrated pest management. The flight behaviour of male A. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Genetic dissection of experimental arthritis in the DA rat

    Författare :Liselotte Bäckdahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :RA; Experimental arthritis; QTL; congene; Aplec; > human association;

    Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting peripheral joints. Persistent inflammation causes cartilage deterioration with severe joint deformations as a consequence. The etiology is largely unknown but complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors contribute to the disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Genetic and immunological regulation of multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

    Författare :Rita Nohra; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :EAE; MS; QTL; linkage studies; association studies; Vav1; RGMA; IL21R;

    Sammanfattning : Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by a combination of environmental factors and multiple genes. Animal models offer possibilities to keep environmental factors and selected genes constant and very large families may be created. LÄS MER
