6. Respiratory burst and severity of demyelinating diseases
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) and the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) are tissue-specific inflammatory diseases of the central and the peripheral nervous system, respectively. A contemporary analysis infers that these are complex autoimmune disorders. LÄS MER
7. Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia and Emotion : Effects of pictorial stimuli and state anxiety
Sammanfattning : Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) refers to heart rate variations due to respiration, which results from parasympathetic nervous system activity mediated via the tenth cranial nerve, the vagus. Thus, the magnitude of RSA is considered as an index of cardiac vagal tone. This thesis explored RSA during emotional responding in healthy women and men. LÄS MER
8. Health-related aerosol particle studies, respiratory tract deposition and indoor source identification
Sammanfattning : Aerosol particles have, since Classical Antiquity, been linked to adverse effects on human health. It is estimated that the particles in urban air pollution causes 100 000 deaths in Europe each year, whereof 5 000 in Sweden. LÄS MER
9. Spirodynamics. New methods for continuous monitoring of respiratory mechanics in ventilator-treated patients
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Ventilator treatment is often life-saving but has the inherent risk of causing damage to lung tissues. Overdistension and repetitive collapsing/opening of alveoli should be avoided. Monitoring of respiratory mechanics has a central role in accomplishing this. LÄS MER
10. Structure of the distal lung studied with inhaled nanoparticles
Sammanfattning : Techniques able to detect impairments in the distal human lung are lacking. Since inhaled nanoparticles are predominantly deposited in the acini, their deposition can be used to derive structural properties of the region. Intheory, structural enlargements in the distal lung imply that less inhaled nanoparticles deposit there. LÄS MER
