21. The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway and heart rate variability with special reference to dialysis and renal denervation
Sammanfattning : Background: The Cholinergic Anti-inflammatory Pathway (CAP) is a nerve-mediated circuit through which the vagus nerve regulates the activity of the inflammatory immune response. Injury, ischemia or infection activate the afferent vagus. In the medulla oblongata. LÄS MER
22. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Icodextrin is a glucose polymer which is used as osmotic agent to provide sustained ultrafiltration (UF) during the long (8-16 hours) dwell in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aims of this thesis were to study: the metabolism of icodextrin in the peritoneal cavity and in the circulation of PD patients and non-uremic rats, the role of alpha-amylase in its hydrolysis, and the rate of breakdown of a synthetic maltoheptaose (G7) ex vivo which we propose as a novel measure of amylase mediated oligosaccharide metabolism. 23. Heparin-binding protein and organ failure in critical illness
Sammanfattning : Background: For patients severely ill enough to require care in an intensive care unit (ICU), both the disease itself (e.g. bacteria in the blood in sepsis or fractures after trauma) and effects of the immune system can cause circulatory, pulmonary, or renal dysfunction. Leukocytes play a dominant role in the immune system. LÄS MER
24. Renal function decline and optimized planning for kidney replacement therapy
Sammanfattning : Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) is an increasing health problem world-wide, and the prevalence increases with age. CKD is a life-threatening condition, with high risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Patients with advanced CKD often need Kidney Replacement Therapy, (KRT), this includes transplantation, dialysis or conservative care. LÄS MER
25. Impact of peritoneal solute transport rate on nutritional status and clinical outcome in peritoneal dialysis patients
Sammanfattning : The transport characteristics of the peritoneal membrane may be influenced by inflammation and various comorbid diseases (CMD) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. On the other hand, the peritoneal solute transport rate (PSTR) may influence patient characteristics such as nutritional status as well as the clinical outcome of PD patients. LÄS MER
