  1. 11. Oxidant-induced cell death in lymphocytes: mechanisms of induction and resistance

    Författare :Fredrik Bergh Thorén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :reactive oxygen species; cell death; apoptosis; poly ADP-ribose polymerase-1; apoptosis-inducing factor; natural killer cells; phagocytes; dendritic cells;

    Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (oxidants, oxygen radicals) produced by the phagocytic NADPH oxidase have pivotal roles in immunity. Patients lacking a functional NADPH oxidase suffer from chronic granulomatous disease, which is characterized by recurring bacterial infections and thus manifesting the importance of reactive oxygen species in host defense against bacteria. 2. 12. Antibacterial Strategies for Titanium Biomaterials

    Författare :Erik Unosson; Ken Welch; Håkan Engqvist; Timo Närhi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Titanium; silver; biomaterial; antibacterial; photocatalysis; hydrogen peroxide; reactive oxygen species; combinatorial materials science; Engineering Science with specialization in Materials Science; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot materialvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Titanium and titanium based alloys are widely used in dentistry and orthopedics to replace hard tissue and to mend broken bones. It has become a material of choice due to its low density, high strength, good biocompatibility and its capacity to integrate closely with the bone. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Therapeutic opportunities of alpha-1-microglobulin A study in placenta, blood, skin and eye

    Författare :Martin Cederlund; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reactive oxygen species; hemoglobin; myeloperoxidase; oxidative stress; α1-microglobulin;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes functional studies of the human protein alpha-1-microglobulin (A1M), with the aim of exploring its usefulness as a therapeutic agent in diseases where oxidative stress is a prominent feature. A1M is a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein with reductase activity and radical- and heme-binding antioxidative functions. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Modulation of Receptor Signaling and Functional Selectivity in Neutrophils

    Författare :Michael Gabl; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophils; G-protein coupled receptors; reactive oxygen species; ligands; functional selectivity; allosteric modulation;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophils are important effector cells of the innate immune system and in the regulation of inflammation. Many of their functions, such as chemotactic migration, secretion of granule constituents and activation of the oxygen radical-producing NADPH-oxidase, are regulated by cell surface receptors. 5. 15. Radical generation and stabilisation in ribonucleotide reductase R2

    Författare :Martin Högbom; Lawrence Que; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Diiron carboxylate proteins contain a cofactor that consists of two iron atoms coordinated by carboxylate and histidine ligands. These proteins perform a multitude of chemical reactions in the cell that generally involve activation of molecular oxygen at the diiron site. LÄS MER
