  1. 1. Dynamic Changes in the Peripheral and the Central Nervous Systems in Patients with Prior Polio

    Författare :Arne Sandberg; Erik Stålberg; Jože Trontelj; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; polio; prior polio; weakness; Macro EMG; EMG; post polio syndrome; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : After the acute spell of poliomyelitis, patients commonly suffers from sequelae of weakness. Some of these patients experience new weakness after a time period of stable symptoms.The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the possible mechanisms for persistent weakness and development of new weakness in prior polio patients. 2. 2. Vaccine responses after chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation in patients with hematological malignancies

    Författare :Sigrun Einarsdottir; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vaccination; chemotherapy; stem cell transplantation; antibodies; tetanus; diphtheria; polio; Tick-borne encephalitis TBE ; SARS-CoV-2;

    Sammanfattning : The prevention of infections in patients with hematological malignancies is important given the inherent immune deficiency associated with these diseases and the immunosuppressive effects of treatment. This thesis investigated the efficacy of vaccines against various pathogens among patients with hematological disease receiving chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation, including the longevity of vaccine responses. 3. 3. The post-polio syndrome : studies of immunology and immunomodulatory intervention

    Författare :Henrik Gonzalez; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Post-polio syndrome; PPS; inflammation; cytokines; muscle strength; quality of life;

    Sammanfattning : Late effects in patients with prior poliomyelitis were first reported in the nineteenth century and have been referred to as the post-polio syndrome (PPS). PPS is characterized by new muscular deterioration, fatigue and pain after a stable period of at least 15 years. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Ventilatory aspects of sleep and activity in patients with neuromuscular disorders

    Författare :Brita Klefbeck Stridsman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :assisted ventilation; cervical cord injury; inspiratory muscle training; neuromuscular diseases; sleep; oximetry; trunk stability;

    Sammanfattning : Patients with cervical cord injuries (M) and slowly progressive neuromuscular diseases, such as prior polio and muscular dystrophy, often have decreased ventilatory capacity. This could affect both their daytime level of activity and sleep quality. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Comprehensive evaluation of spasticity and other sensorimotor dysfunctions after lesions to the central or peripheral nervous system

    Författare :Gaia Valentina Pennati; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Understanding how sensorimotor impairments may contribute to changes in body structure and function, and also to activity and participation limitations is an important challenge in neurorehabilitation research, of high clinical relevance. Available assessment methods include mainly clinical scales, often with inadequate psychometric properties, such as the Modified Ashworth scale for assessment of spasticity. LÄS MER
