11. Uncovering novel cell wall chemistries in gram negative bacteria : from development or dedicated peptidoglycan chemometric tools to functional genomics
Sammanfattning : Bacteria are surrounded by an external cell wall whose main component is a polymeric net-like structure called the peptidoglycan (PG) or murein sacculus. PG plays crucial roles in bacterial physiology (eg morphogenesis, growth fitness and regulation of innate immunity). LÄS MER
12. As Coordenadas da Viagem no Tempo : Uma contribuição para a teoria da ficção histórica baseada em alguns textos portugueses dos séculos XVI, XIX e XX
Sammanfattning : In Portugal, as in other countries, a common characteristic of many of the novels published in the past twenty years is the recourse to a repertoire of literary devices that recall those of the historical novel. On the basis of critical studies published in the 1990’s, and in particular Fernández Prieto’s Poética de la Novela Histórica, this thesis undertakes a study of the Portuguese historical novel with the aim of defining, to the extent possible, the limits of this literary genre, and to examine in detail some of its intrinsic—and pertinent—semantic and pragmatic traits: the setting of a fictional narrative in the past, theintroduction of historical persons and events and, not the least, the transtextual relationship between the fictional and the historiographic text. 13. El personaje femenino de la novela indigenista
Sammanfattning : The indigenista novel is a realistic novel with a strongly ideological character that was developed primarily in the Andean countries (Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador) during the first half of the 20th century with the purpose of making the reader aware of the living conditions of the indigenous Native American population. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the female characters in five of the works that have had the most influence on the development of the indigenista novel: Aves sin nido (1889) by Clorinda Matto de Turner, Raza de bronce (1918) by Alcides Arguedas, Huasipungo (1934) by Jorge Icaza, El mundo es ancho y ajeno (1941) by Ciro Alegría, and Los ríos profundos (1958) by José María Arguedas. 14. Evolution of symbiotic lineages and the origin of new traits
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the genomic study of symbionts of two different groups of hymenopterans: bees and ants. Both groups of insects have major ecological impact, and investigating their microbiomes increases our understanding of their health, diversity and evolution. LÄS MER
15. Below, above and beyond – seagrass ecosystem functions in a connected coastal landscape
Sammanfattning : Seagrass meadows constitute important habitat for a plethora of organisms, rendering them important habitats for conserving biodiversity. Seagrass meadows also modify the environment by attenuating wave and current energy. LÄS MER
