31. Hippocampal volumetry in mild cognitive impairment
Sammanfattning : Dementia is a syndrome with cognitive decline as a prominent feature. MCI is similarly a syndrome of cognitive decline, albeit with much subtler symptoms, and has been identified as a condition at risk for progression to dementia. A considerable clinical challenge lies in identifying MCI patients with an underlying dementia disorder. LÄS MER
32. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus
Sammanfattning : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 33. Detection and haemodilutive treatment of cerebral arterial vasospasm and delayed ischaemia after Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with cerebral arterial vasospasm and ischaemia, a serious complication after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. Firstly is the noninvasive transcranial Doppler ultrasound and transcranial cerebral oximetry techniques evaluated in detecting cerebral arterial vasospasm in clinical practice. LÄS MER
34. Severe Head Injury. Evaluation of Acute Treatment and Rehabilitation
Sammanfattning : Mortality after severe head injury can be considerably reduce with a therapy using physiological principles for brain volume regulation and preserved microcirculation, with the main purpose of restricting the rise in ICP to reasonable levels simultaneously with preservation of adequate blood supply. This study shows that the ?Lund Concept? can reduce mortality in patients with severe traumatic brain lesions from 47% to 8%. LÄS MER
35. Aspects of Frontal and Medial Temporal Brain Functions : Neuropsychological and functional imaging studies in normals and in frontotemporal dementia
Sammanfattning : The thesis is based on five investigations. In the first study the nature and the degree of cognitive impairment of patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is explored. The results from neuropsychological assessment are described as three levels of cognitive impairment. LÄS MER
