1. Tissue-Selective Activation and Toxicity of Substituted Dichlorobenzenes : Studies on the Mechanism of Cell Death in the Olfactory Mucosa
Sammanfattning : The nasal passages are constantly exposed to both air- and bloodborne foreign compounds. In particular, the olfactory mucosa is demonstrated to be susceptible to a variety of drugs and chemicals. LÄS MER
2. Selective Retention of β-Carbolines and 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene in the Brain : Role of Neuromelanin and Cytochrome P450 for Toxicity
Sammanfattning : The ß-carbolines norharman and harman structurally resemble the synthetic compound 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) that is known for its ability to damage neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and thereby induce parkinsonism. MPTP is, however, not normally present in the environment whereas the ß-carbolines are present in cooked food and tobacco smoke. LÄS MER
3. Protein expression analysis of insulin producing cells exposed to endoplasmic reticulum stress
Sammanfattning : The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing rapidly as a result of the obesity epidemic. T2DM develops in individuals who fails to compensate for increased demand of insulin. LÄS MER
4. Translational studies of drug-induced tumor cell death
Sammanfattning : It is essential to understand the mechanisms of action of anticancer drugs in order to obtain good treatment results. I have in the present thesis studied clinically used anticancer agents as well as other agents that induce tumor cell death. LÄS MER
5. Studies on the assembly of cytosolic lipid droplets. Importance of Phospholipase D and ADRP in the process
Sammanfattning : The storage of triglycerides in cells such as adipocytes, liver or muscle cells is of great physiological importance, having implications for our most important metabolic diseases such as obesity, the metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. A common denominator in these diseases is the insulin resistance, which is also highly related to the production of atherogenic lipoproteins and the development of atherosclerosis and consequently cardio-vascular diseases.
