  1. 1. Bioprospecting and deep-sea genetic resources in a fragmenting international law

    Författare :Niels Krabbe; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; public international law; law of the sea; international environmental law; WTO law; bioprospecting; biotechnology; genetic resources; deep-sea; biological diversity; areas beyond national jurisdiction; fragmentation; treaty interpretation; norm conflict; regimes; commons; conflict clauses;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates if public international law manages to function as a coherent system in the case of deep-sea bioprospecting, where rules in three regimes provide seemingly inconsistent obligations for states. Based on an investigation of the development of bioprospecting and patenting of deep-sea genetic resources, the study explores how rules in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (WTO TRIPS) apply to such activities. 2. 2. Opening Pandora's Box : Exploring Flexibilities and Alternatives for Protecting Traditional Knowledge and Genetic Resources under the Intellectual Property Framework

    Författare :Frantzeska Papadopoulou; Marianne Levin; Jens Schovsbo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Traditional knowledge; genetic resources; intellectual property; biodiversity; Rawls; Coase; benefit sharing; patents; Convention on Biological Diversity; TRIPS; bioprospecting; property rights; liability; reward system; Commons; ITPGRFA; Calabresi Melamed; UPOV; FAO; Private Law; civilrätt;

    Sammanfattning : What happens when resources get valuable and scarce? How is Intellectual Property dealing with market failures related to sub-patentable innovation or purely traditional knowledge with interesting applications? The protection of traditional knowledge and genetic resources (TKGR) has been one of the major modern challenges in international IP law. The entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its implementation in national legislation has created more questions than the ones it answered. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Beyond GWAS : Novel Methods and Resources for Genetic Epidemiology

    Författare :Daniel Schmitz; Åsa Johansson; Tuuli Lappalainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GWAS; NGS; long-read sequencing; mendelian randomization; WGS; CNVs;

    Sammanfattning : Since the first human genome assembly’s release, our knowledge of the genetic architecture of complex traits and diseases has grown steadily. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) played a major role but are limited to common traits and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Barley genetic resources for Kyrgyz plant breeding

    Författare :Birjan Usubaliev; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most important forage cereal crops in Kyrgyzstan. Today it is grown under extremely hard conditions in many highland regions where other crops cannot compete. Kyrgyzstan is a mountain agrarian country and agriculture is one of the major sectors of the economy. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fishing the gene pool : Genetic structure, admixture and behavioural complexity in fisheries management

    Författare :Kim H. Berndt; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fisheries management; Fishery stock; Stock discrimination; Genetic structure; Genetic admixture; Admixture zone; Stock substructure; Phenotypic divergence; Gadus morhua; Salmo trutta;

    Sammanfattning : Prudent management of marine fish resources relies on separation and management of biologically meaningful groups of conspecifics, termed fishery stocks, often depicted as self-sustaining, spatiotemporally separated and demographically independent entities. Such stock discrimination has however proven challenging. LÄS MER
