  1. 1. Targeting cytotoxic species in amyloid diseases

    Författare :Malin Lindhagen Persson; Anders Olofsson; Lars Tjernberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Amyloid-beta; transthyretin; FAP; amyloid; cytotoxic species; oligomers; medicinsk biokemi; Medical Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Amyloid diseases are a world-wide problem causing great human suffer and large economical costs. Although amyloid deposits, a common denominator in all amyloid disorders, are detrimental to the surrounding tissue, there is a poor correlation between total amyloid burden and clinical symptoms. 2. 2. Structure and Activity of Circular Plant Proteins : Cytotoxic Effects of Viola Cyclotides

    Författare :Anders Herrmann; Ulf Göransson; Lars Bohlin; Douglas Kinghorn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Pharmacognosy; cyclotide; cytotoxic; anti-tumour; macrocyclic; cyclic cystine knot; Alpine violet; Sweet violet; Viola; Violaceae; chemical modifications; structure-activity studies; mass spectroscopy; cDNA clones; Farmakognosi;

    Sammanfattning : Cyclotides are a family of small and macrocyclic proteins that have been found in Violacaee and Rubiaceae plant species. These proteins contain a cystine knot: two disulfides bonds together with their connecting peptide backbone form an embedded ring which is penetrated by a third disulfide bond. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Distribution and Chemical Diversity of Cyclotides from Violaceae : Impact of Structure on Cytotoxic Activity and Membrane Interactions

    Författare :Robert Burman; Ulf Göransson; Lars Bohlin; William Gerwick; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cyclotide; Violaceae; Viola; Cytotoxic; Mechanism; In vivo; Structure-activity; Membrane; Mass spectrometry; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Sammanfattning : During the last decade there has been increased interest in the cyclotide protein family, which consist of a circular chain of approximately 30 amino acids, including six cysteines that form three disulfide bonds, arranged in a cyclic cystine knot motif. This thesis gives new insights in cyclotide distribution and occurrence in the plant family Violaceae, structure-activity relationships for cytotoxic effects, membrane disruption and adsorption on lipid membranes, and evaluates toxicity and anti-tumor activity in vivo. 4. 4. Reactive oxygen species as signalling molecules in immunity

    Författare :Åsa Betten; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reactive oxygen species; NK cells; phagocytes; serotonin; histamine; myeloperoxidase;

    Sammanfattning : Cytotoxic lymphocytes such as natural killer (NK) cells and subsets of T cells are key components of the host defense against malignancy and infection. Earlier studies have demonstrated that NK cells and several phenotypes of T cells become dysfunctional and apoptotic after exposure to autologous monocyte/macrophages and other phagocytes. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Cytotoxic Compounds of Plant Origin – Biological and Chemical Diversity

    Författare :Petra Lindholm; Anders Backlund; Lars Bohlin; Kristín Ingólfsdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; pharmacognosy; cytotoxicity; antitumour; Nuphar alkaloid; cyclotide; thionin; cardiac glycoside; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Sammanfattning : The development of resistance by tumour cells to chemotherapeutic agents is a major problem in cancer treatments. One way to counter this is to find compounds with cytotoxic mechanisms other than those of drugs in clinical use today. LÄS MER
