1. Interactions between climate, natural disturbances, and regeneration in boreal and hemi-boreal forests
Sammanfattning : Natural disturbance is an important driving force of community dynamics in many forest types around the globe. Understanding spatial and temporal properties of disturbance events in the present and in the past is important in formulating the nature conservation strategies as well as for the modeling of climate and human impacts on forest vegetation. 2. Aspects of regeneration in tropical secondary forests of Northeast Borneo affected by selective logging, El Niño-induced drought and fire
Sammanfattning : A large proportion of the world´s tropical rainforests are today secondary forests, a term encompassing forests in various degrees of degeneration. For the main traits of old-growth forests´ structures, species composition and ecosystem functions to recover, regeneration of non-pioneer tree species is essential. LÄS MER
3. Varför gör vi inte som vi säger? : Realitet, retorik och dialektik i svensk stadsutveckling med fokus på energi och fysiska strukturer
Sammanfattning : In this doctoral thesis, case-studies on comprehensive planning and urban development in two Swedish municipalities reveals explanations and answers to how urban form that affects energy use and climate has changed between 1990-2010, how visions and goals are expressed in planning documents and what might cause the gap between the rhetoric of planning and the reality of urban development concerning energy and climate issues.Several methods are used under the canopy of case study methodology and an abductive research approach; time-series analysis with GIS-indicators to measure changes in urban structure; discourse analysis with a focus on rhetoric and interviews with responsible planning officials using a range of dialectics-based concepts as a framework to reveal hidden structures and mechanisms behind the gap. 4. On ash : a 12-year population ecological study of Fraxinus excelsior L., with special reference to some of its inter-specific interactions, in the deciduous woodland of the outer archipelago of Stockholm
Sammanfattning : Fruiting in ash was irregular over the years. Years with abundant fruit production occurred as well as more or less barren years. The resource status of the trees had no decisive influence. LÄS MER
5. Temporal Characteristics of Boreal Forest Radar Measurements
Sammanfattning : Radar observations of forests are sensitive to seasonal changes, meteorological variables and variations in soil and tree water content. These phenomena cause temporal variations in radar measurements, limiting the accuracy of tree height and biomass estimates using radar data. LÄS MER
