16. Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in serum phospholipids - relation to genetic polymorphisms, diet and allergy development in children
Sammanfattning : Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential for human cell and tissue development. In foetus, PUFAs are supplied via placental transfer from maternal circulation. After birth, PUFAs are supplied via the diet. Long chain PUFAs (LCPUFAs) may also be synthesized from precursor fatty acids present in the diet. LÄS MER
17. Oesophageal function, acid reflux and bronchopulmonary disease : A study on children and adolescents with asthma or cystic fibrosis
Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises a literature review of gastro-ocsophageal reflux (GOR) and six studies which aim to determine the prevalence of oesophageal dysfunction (OD) and pathological GOR and their significance concerning the bronchopulmonary disease in children and adolescents with bronchial asthma or cystic fibrosis (CF). Oesophageal function was assessed by manomctry combined with oesophageal provocation tests. LÄS MER
18. Managing irritable bowel syndrome - Dietary approaches and food intolerance
Sammanfattning : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a complex disorder where diet plays a pivotal role in symptom generation for many patients. The aim of this thesis was to explore how diet and self-perceived food intolerance relate to gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms among patients with IBS, and within different manifestations of IBS. 19. Clinical studies on the role of eicosanoids in the asthmatic airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : The underlying mechanisms in the asthmatic airway inflammation involve the interaction between different cells and mediators that consequently result in different clinical phenotypes. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the impact of inflammatory mediators, with emphasis on eicosanoids, on the inflammatory and functional airway responses under basal and triggered conditions in subjects with asthma, in particular ASA/NSAID-intolerant and allergic phenotypes. 20. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, maternal and infant immune responses and allergic disease in infancy
Sammanfattning : Background: The incidence of allergic diseases in industrialized countries has increased, and a relation between allergy and dietary fatty acids has been proposed. Modulation of the maternal immune function during pregnancy may have an impact on future clinical outcome in the child. LÄS MER
