6. The Relation between Serotonergic Biomarkers and Behaviour : – studies on human primates, non-human primates and transgenic mice
Sammanfattning : Rationale: The serotonergic system is involved in the modulation of emotion and plays an important role for personality and vulnerability for psychiatric disorders. In the papers included in this thesis, we investigate three biological factors that have been studied in relation to psychiatric symptoms: Platelet monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity, and variations in the MAO-A and the serotonin transporter (5HTT) genes. 7. Childhood bereavement, stress resilience, and cancer risk : an integrated register-based approach
Sammanfattning : Accumulating evidence suggests that psychosocial stress and susceptibility to stressful exposures – stress resilience – influence the risk of various health outcomes, but the potential link with cancer occurrence is unclear. The aims of this thesis were to test if loss of a close relative, a marker of severe psychological stress, and stress resilience measured during late adolescence are associated with cancer risk later in life, as well as to explore potential underlying mechanisms. 8. Diet, lifestyle, antioxidants, and biomarkers of cancer risk - an epidemiological report from the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines associations between a number of epidemiological or biological markers of cancer risk and oxidative stress, in order to achieve a better understanding of how diet, lifestyle, and genetic factors contribute to the occurrence of oxidative stress. Data from the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort was used. LÄS MER
9. Phosphatidylethanol - formation and degradation in blood and organs
Sammanfattning : Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid formed exclusively by the action of phospholipase D (PLD) in the presence of ethanol. The degradation of PEth is slow and due to its accumulation in some cells the possibility to use PEth as marker of ethanol intake has been proposed. LÄS MER
10. Drug and alcohol induced hepatotoxicity
Sammanfattning : Drug induced hepatotoxicity is the most common reason cited for withdrawal of already approved drugs from the market and accounts for more than 50 percent of cases of acute liver failure in the United States. Ethanol (EtOH) causes a further substantial amount of liver insufficiencies world wide. LÄS MER
