    Sammanfattning : Over the last decade, machine learning has gained a lot of traction in many areas, and with the advent of new GPU models that include acceleration hardware for neural network inference, real-time applications have also started to take advantage of these algorithms. In general, machine learning and neural network methods are not designed to run at the speeds that are required for rendering in high-performance real-time environments, except for very specific and typically limited uses.     Sammanfattning : Virtual surgery planning systems have demonstrated great potential to help surgeons achieve a better functional and aesthetic outcome for the patient, and at the same time reduce time in the operating room resulting in considerable cost savings. However, the two-dimensional tools employed in these systems today, such as a mouse and a conventional graphical display, are difficult to use for interaction with three-dimensional anatomical images.     Sammanfattning : The improvements in GPU hardware, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and the push for fully dynamic realistic-looking video games, has been driving more research in the use of ray tracing in real-time applications. The work described in this thesis covers multiple aspects such as optimisations, adapting existing offline methods to real-time constraints, and adding effects which were hard to simulate without the new hardware, all working towards a fully dynamic surface illumination rendering in real-time.
