16. Biodiversity-ecosystem function in a willow biomass production system : tree productivity, litter decomposition and fungal community
Sammanfattning : The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function is an important issue in ecology. Stands of Salix (willow) are suitable model systems to study this relationship. Salix and other crops are mainly grown in monoculture in agricultural systems. LÄS MER
17. Applications of visible and near infrared spectroscopy for sorting and identification of tree seeds
Sammanfattning : Seeds are the most commonly used regeneration material for reforestation purpose; hence interest in “precision sowing” among nurseries is high due to the high cost of containerized seedling production. In addition, the increased interest in growing hybrid larch in commercial forestry has raised concerns about the purity of hybrid larch seed lots, as there are large proportions of pure parental seeds mixed with hybrid larch seed lots. 18. Nutrient supply to reed canary grass as a bioenergy crop : intercropping and fertilization with ash or sewage sludge
Sammanfattning : Production of renewable energy from herbaceous crops on agricultural land is of great interest since fossil fuels need to be replaced with sustainable energy sources. Reed canary grass (RCG), Phalaris arundinacea L. is an interesting species for this purpose. LÄS MER
19. Diversifying the utility and species composition of Nordic forage systems : new fractionation methods and novel legume species
Sammanfattning : Leys, a temporary grassland grown as part of a crop rotation, represent an essential component of agricultural production in the Nordic countries. This thesis explores methods to diversify the utility of feed produced from leys through fractionation, as well as increase the diversity of legume species within the stand. LÄS MER
20. Utilization of Andean grain flours in the development of wheat flour dough
Sammanfattning : Bread dough was studied in relation to three Andean grain flours, quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa), amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus) and canahua (Chenopodium pallidicaule), as partial replacements for wheat flour with the perspectives of dough and breadmaking. This thesis deals with the understanding of both dough as a complex system, consisting of various water-filled polymers, and dough as a viscoelastic material, with different responses to deformations, in order to contribute to possibilities for improvements in dough analysis and development of novel products.
