1. On the origin and evolution of blue compact galaxies
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the origin and evolution of blue compact galaxies (BCGs). BCGs are low mass galaxies characterised by blue colours, low chemical abundances and high star formation rates. The gas consumtion time scale is considerable shorter than the age of the universe and thus the high star formation rate must be transient. LÄS MER
2. Super Star Clusters in Blue Compact Galaxies : Evidence for a near-infrared flux excess and properties of the starburst phase
Sammanfattning : Luminous Blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are metal-poor actively star-forming systems, characterised by bright ultraviolet and blue luminosities. Hubble Space Telescope high-resolution data have revealed that the luminous star-forming knots in these galaxies are composed of hundreds of young massive star clusters. LÄS MER
3. Where stars are born : Kinematics and photometry of starburst and postburst galaxies
Sammanfattning : The understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies will not be complete until we understand the physical processes that trigger and regulate starformation in them. This work is about star formation on several size scales. LÄS MER
4. Star Formation and feedback at key physical scales for galaxy evolution
Sammanfattning : Feedback from young, massive stars plays an essential role in the self-regulation of star formation in galaxies, and in shaping the galaxies' global properties. This phenomenon originates at small scales, surrounding the stars, but has been observed to be effective up to galactic-wide scales. LÄS MER
5. Lyman-alpha radiative transfer in Star-forming galaxies
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the intrinsically strongest spectral signature of star-forming galaxies: the Lyman alpha recombination line of the hydrogen atom (hereafter Lya). Located at the wavelength of 1215. LÄS MER
