1. Children born preterm : A 19-year perspective
Sammanfattning : In this longitudinal, prospective study, 39 preterm children, consecutively born before 35 weeks of completed gestation and 23 full-term children were followed up after 19 years. Multifaceted aspects of outcome were evaluated. The results indicate a clear increase in somatic morbidity during growth and young adulthood among the preterms. LÄS MER
2. When the paediatric heart is affected : impact on nutrition, growth and body composition from infancy to adolescence
Sammanfattning : BackgroundChildren with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) and very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) are two distinct groups of patients with different clinical care needs. Irrespective of the type of heart condition, nutritional intake and growth is largely affected in these individuals during infancy. LÄS MER
3. Auditory event-related potentials and cognitive outcome after very preterm birth
Sammanfattning : Children born before 32 gestational weeks have a high incidence of neuropsychological deficits. The structural and functional correlates of such impairments in preterm infants are incompletely understood, and early diagnostic tools are needed, but still lacking. LÄS MER
4. Probiotics and prebiotics in extremely preterm infants
Sammanfattning : Background: Extremely preterm (EPT) infants born before gestational week (gw) 28 and with extremely low birth weight (ELBW, .... LÄS MER
5. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth
Sammanfattning : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout.
