  1. 1. Genetic polymorphisms, IGF-1, and oral contraceptive use in women from high-risk breast cancer families

    Författare :Maria Henningson; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; familial breast cancer; premenopausal women; htSNP; GSTP1; polymorphism; BRCA1; BRCA2; IGF-1; oral contraceptives; CYP17; GSTT1; GSTM1;

    Sammanfattning : Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Swedish women, affecting more than 7000 women each year. About 5-10% of all breast cancers are hereditary, with a monogenic inheritance pattern, but only 2-4% are explained by germline mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers have a 60-80% risk of developing breast cancer. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Three-dimensional ultrasound studies of normal and abnormal ovaries

    Författare :Ligita Jokubkiene; gynekologisk och prenatal ultraljudsdiagnostik Obstetrisk; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ovary; ovarian follicle; ovarian neoplasms; ultrasonography; three-dimensional imaging; Doppler ultrasound imaging; vascular morphology;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this work were: 1) to estimate the number of follicles, ovarian volume and power Doppler vascular indices and their changes with age using three-dimensional (3D) transvaginal grey-scale and power Doppler ultrasound in asymptomatic women of fertile age either with natural menstrual cycles or using combined oral contraceptives, and 2) to determine whether tumour vascularity, assessed by 3D power Doppler ultrasound, can help discriminate between benign and malignant ovarian tumours. A group of 303 gynaecologically asymptomatic women, aged 20–39 years with normal menstrual cycles (NMC) and another group of 213 women aged 20–39 years using combined oral contraceptives (COC) were examined using two-dimensional (2D) and 3D transvaginal ultrasound once between cycle day 4 and 8. 3. 3. Influence of lifestyle behaviours on bone mineral density among young healthy women: A two-year study. A Tentative Salutary Model

    Författare :Carina Elgán; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; grounded theory; follow-up; Skeleton; muscle system; rheumatology locomotion; Skelett; muskelsystem; reumatologi; multiple triangulation; stress; time spent outdoors; sleep; salutogenic; bone resorption; bone mineral density; Young healthy women; lifestyle;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this prospective observational study with a salutogenic approach was to investigate bone mineral density (BMD) and BMD changes in the heel bone, in a group of healthy women, in relation to physiological factors and lifestyle behaviours over a two-year period as well as investigating the women’s view of their lifestyle behaviours. Data were collected in 1999 (T1) and 2001 (T2). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Estrogen receptor and multixenobiotic resistance genes in freshwater fish and snails: identification and expression analysis after pharmaceutical exposure

    Författare :Cecilia Hultin; Miljövetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; EE2; NSAID; estrogen receptor; oestrogen receptor; multixenobiotic resistance; fish; gastropods;

    Sammanfattning : Pharmaceuticals are today released into aquatic environments where they can interfere with organisms' biological processes.The general research objective was to analyze how aquatic freshwater organisms are affected by exposure to pharmaceuticals that are categorized by the EU as potential risk factors to the environment (i.e. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Impact of Lifestyle, Hormones, and Genes on Breast Cancer

    Författare :Maria Hietala; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Breast cancer; BRCA1; BRCA2; androgen receptor; CAG; GGC; polymorphism; htSNP; oral contraceptives; testosterone; breast-feeding; prolactin; premenopausal women; CYP2D; complementary and alternative medicin; antidepressants;

    Sammanfattning : Approximately 7000 women are diagnosed and 1500 women die from breast cancer in Sweden every year. The aim of this thesis was to study the interplay of polymorphisms, hormone levels, lifestyle, and the use of concomitant medication in relation to risk and prognosis in two cohorts: one composed of young healthy women from high-risk breast cancer families and the other of breast cancer patients from the general population.
