1. The State as Investment Market : An Analytical Framework for Interpreting Politics and Bureaucracy in Kyrgyzstan
Sammanfattning : What type of state has emerged in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, and what kind of theoretical framework must we develop to understand its behavior and performance? This study argues that the logic of political and bureaucratic organization follows that of an investment market in which public offices are purchased with the expectation of yielding a favorable return. This theory represents a novel perspective on the post-communist state which has hitherto either been premised on modernization theory or emphasized a robustly personalistic logic of political organization. Sammanfattning : The dissertation is an analysis of financial services firms’ duty to manage the conflicts of interest that can arise within the scope of the firm-client relationship in the financial services sectors in the EU and China. Three services in particular are used as examples, namely buying and selling shares in companies on behalf of clients, investment advisory, and individual portfolio management in relation to such shares. 4. Ecosystem Services and Disservices in an Agriculture–Forest Mosaic : A Study of Forest and Tree Management and Landscape Transformation in Southwestern Ethiopia
Sammanfattning : The intertwined challenges of food insecurity, deforestation, and biodiversity loss remain perennial challenges in Ethiopia, despite increasing policy interventions. This thesis investigates smallholding farmers’ tree- and forest-based livelihoods and management practices, in the context of national development and conservation policies, and examines how these local management practices and policies transform the agriculture–forest mosaic landscapes of southwestern Ethiopia.
