  1. 16. The regulatory role of microRNA in human adipocytes and their link to insulin resistance

    Författare :Yasmina Belarbi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : White adipose tissue (WAT) is a highly plastic organ which secretes a large number of peptide factors termed adipokines. Increased caloric intake increases WAT mass which results in marked alterations in the secretory pattern. This may be mediated via both transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Statin-induced cellular effects mediated by the P2X7 receptor

    Författare :Oras Mistafa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cholesterol-lowering statins have been shown to inhibit growth of different cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Epidemiological studies also indicate a chemopreventive effect of statins. We have investigated the effect of statins on Akt/protein kinase B signaling and their sensitizing effect of cytostatic drugs. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Effects of immunosuppressive drugs on human adipose tissue metabolism

    Författare :Maria J Pereira; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cyclosporin A; tacrolimus; rapamycin; glucocorticoids; new onset diabetes after transplantation; adipocytes; insulin signalling; glucose uptake; lipolysis; lipogenesis;

    Sammanfattning : The immunosuppressive agents (IAs) rapamycin, cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, as well as glucocorticoids are used to prevent rejection of transplanted organs and to treat autoimmune disorders. Despite their desired action on the immune system, these agents have serious long-term metabolic side-effects, including dyslipidemia and new onset diabetes mellitus after transplantation. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Expression of inflammatory and insulin signaling genes in acute and chronic stress

    Författare :Anna Witasp; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The acute surgical stress response induces a short-term inflammatory and insulin resistant condition, commonly producing hyperglycemia, which is strongly associated to morbidity and mortality in postsurgical patients. The chronic state of renal insufficiency, on the other hand, represents a long-term stress associated with alarmingly high mortality rates, primarily due to cardiovascular complications, and is similarly related to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. 5. 20. Molecular mechanisms of insulin action in human skeletal muscle and adipose tissue : implications for diabetes and obesity

    Författare :Marie Björnholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Glucose transport; insulin signal transduction; skeletal muscle; adipose tissue; type 2 diabetes mellitus; obesity; very low calorie diet.;

    Sammanfattning : Studies of animal models of type 2 diabetes mellitus implicate that impaired insulin signal transduction to glucose transport accounts for whole body insulin resistance in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. The overall aim of the present thesis was to determine insulin signal transduction to glucose transport in human skeletal muscle and adipose tissue from type 2 diabetic patients and obese insulin resistant subjects.
