  1. 1. At the crossroads of bioenergy and agriculture in developing countries : Challenges and prospects for fossil fuels replacement and CO2 abatement in the case of Thailand

    Författare :Wathanyu Amatayakul; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; bioenergy plantations; land-use decision; developing countries; CO2 abatement; ethanol program; Thailand; wood crops; CDM;

    Sammanfattning : Studies estimate that the potential contribution of biomass to the global primary energy supply from cultivation of crops for energy is substantial in the long term, from about 50 to 240 EJ/year in 2050. Most of this biomass is projected to come from cultivation in developing countries. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Study on the structure and properties of xylan extracted from eucalyptus, sugarcane bagasse and sugarcane straw

    Författare :Danila Carvalho; Mikael Lindström; Åsa Emmer; Sverker Danielsson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Sammanfattning : Lignocellulosic biomasses are an important source of chemical components such as cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses, and can be used for a variety of purposes in both the pulp and paper and chemical conversion industries. Xylan, the main hemicellulose found in hardwood and grass plants, plays an important role during the pulping/pretreatment process reactions, including those used in 2nd generation bioethanol production. 3. 3. Approaches to scale-up CO2 emissions reduction in the energy supply sector in developing countries

    Författare :Wathanyu Amatayakul; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sectoral no-lose target; electricity generation; biomass; CO2 abatement; Thailand; CDM; developing countries; biofuel;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis, which consists of five papers, addresses two themes related to the need for a scale-up of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction in the energy sector in developing countries: (1) approaches to support developing countries in scaling-up emissions reduction, and (2) an approach to scale-up emissions reduction --cultivation of fuel wood to replace fossil fuels in electricity generation.In the first paper, the potential volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction and reduction credits in the electricity sector under a sectoral crediting mechanism based on a sectoral no-lose, non-binding, target in the post-2012 period is assessed for seven high-emitting developing countries by means of different scenarios. 4. 4. Preparation and Characterization of Chemical Pulps from Wood and Reed Canary Grass

    Författare :Helena Håkansson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; pulping; wood; reed canary grass; acid hydrolysis; microcrystalline cellulose; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis presents laboratory results from ethanol pulping of reed canary grass for the production of paper pulp. The focus was on the influence of cooking pa-rameters on the delignification. The strength of the grass pulps was found to be low and the use of such pulps will therefore be limited to a few products. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards molecular weight-dependent uses of kraft lignin

    Författare :Ayumu Tagami; Mikael Lindström; Olena Sevastyanova; Anna Wistrand; Stefan Backa; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kraft lignin; successive solvent fractionation; molecular weight; structural analysis; thermal stability; heat capacity; antioxidant activity; methylene blue sorption; tunicate cellulose nanofiber-starch lignin composites films; film properties; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Sammanfattning : There is growing demand for a more efficient use of polymers that originate from renewable feedstocks due to the depleting supply of fossil fuels, based on economic and environmental reasons. As a result, lignin has attracted renewed interest as a resource for various bioproducts. LÄS MER
