  1. 6. Prognostic and predictive factors in colorectal cancer

    Författare :Kristoffer Derwinger; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :colorectal cancer; prognosis; lymph nodes; lymph node ratio; MTHFR; cyclin E; TNM; staging; metastasis;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: The aim of the thesis was to study prognostic and predictive factors in patients treated for colorectal cancer (CRC). Method: In paper I, a retrospective comparison was made between the patients treated in 1999 (n=180) with those treated in 2004 (n=175). LÄS MER

  2. 7. Effect of genetic polymorphisms on urinary bladder neoplasms

    Författare :Somali Sanyal; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :urinary bladder neoplasms; polymorphisms; metabolism; DNA repair; cell-cycle regulation;

    Sammanfattning : Urinary bladder neoplasms (UBNs) are among the most common malignancies in the world and are mainly attributed to exogenous risk factors such as, smoking, exposure to industrial aromatic amines and certain medicinal drugs which cause DNA damage. The entire process leading to DNA damage and subsequent repair of the damage involves a plethora of enzymes including those involved in metabolic and DNA repair processes. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Homocysteine in cardiovascular disease with special reference to longitudinal changes

    Författare :Johan Hultdin; Torbjörn Nilsson; Bertil Kågedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; homocysteine; methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase MTHFR ; first-ever stroke; first-ever myocardial infarction; longitudinal; prospective; risk factor; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Abnormalities in homocysteine metabolism have been suggested as risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction. In retrospective studies, elevated levels of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and/or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677C>T polymorphism have indicated an increase in risk. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Intake of fruit and vegetables in European children and their mothers, folate intake in Swedish children and health indicators : overweight, plasma homocysteine levels and school performance

    Författare :Agneta Yngve; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Folate status; MTHFR polymorphisms; BM; recommendations; dietary guidelines;

    Sammanfattning : An adequate fruit and vegetable intake provides essential nutrients and nutritive compounds and is considered an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Within the Pro Children project, an instrument for assessment of fruit and vegetable intake was developed, for use in nine European countries. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Factors influencing the metabolism of inorganic arsenic in humans

    Författare :Anna-Lena Lindberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Arsenic; AS3MT; Gender differences; GSTO1; Metabolism; Methylation; MTHFR; Nutrition; Polymorphisms;

    Sammanfattning : Inorganic arsenic (iAs), a naturally occurring drinking water contaminant, is a potent human carcinogen and toxicant. It is believed that in humans, as well as in most mammals, inorganic arsenic is biotransformed via reduction and methylation using one-carbon metabolism with S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) as methyl donor, and is excreted mainly in urine as dimethylarsinate (DMA) and methylarsonate (MA) as well as some unmethylated iAs (arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)).
