  1. 1. Association of hydrophobic organic compounds to organic material in the soil system

    Författare :Silviu-Laurentiu Badea; Mats Tysklind; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HOCs; Organic Matter; Clay; DOM; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Contaminated soils and sediments have been identified as significant secondary sources of organic contaminants.  Leaching tests may be useful tools to estimate the mobility of contaminants via the water phase and thereby the risk for groundwater and surface water contamination. 2. 2. Microplastics in the marine environment and the assessment of potential adverse effects of associated chemicals

    Författare :Christine Schönlau; Anna Kärrman; Magnus Engwall; Magnus Breitholtz; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microplastics; reporter gene bioassays; sorption; HOCs; polyethylene; polypropylene; polystyrene;

    Sammanfattning : During the last decade plastics have gained interest by scientists as emerging pollutants particularly in the marine environment due to their ubiquity and persistence. While several studies report the occurrence of microplastics in surface waters globally, there are no harmonized methods to sample and measure microplastics, and the knowledge of toxicological effects in the marine ecosystem is scarce. 3. 3. Ecological and physiological aspects of contaminant accumulation and transport by the filter-feeding mussel, Mytilus edulis

    Författare :Mikael Björk; Jussi Kukkonen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the influence of food availability on the bioaccumulation kinetics and the transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) by the Baltic Sea blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. In laboratory studies, food availability was found to significantly modify the rate of physiological processes involved in filter-feeding. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Methods to measure mass transfer kinetics, partition ratios and atmospheric fluxes of organic chemicals in forest systems

    Författare :Damien Johann Bolinius; Annika Jahnke; Matthew MacLeod; Michael McLachlan; Antonio Di Guardo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrophobic organic chemicals; vegetation; modified Bowen ratio; surface-atmosphere fluxes; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Vegetation plays an important role in the partitioning, transport and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the environment. This thesis aimed at addressing two key knowledge gaps in our understanding of how plants exchange HOCs with the atmosphere: (1) To improve our understanding of the uptake of HOCs into, and transfer through, leaves of different plant species which can significantly influence the transport and fate of HOCs in the environment; and (2) To evaluate an experimental approach to measure fluxes of HOCs in the field. 5. 5. Contaminated sediments: Methods to assess release and toxicity of organic chemical mixtures

    Författare :Lukas Mustajärvi; Anna Sobek; Jarkko Akkanen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment; Hydrophobic organic contaminants; Flux; Bioturbation; Passive sampling; Passive dosing; Mixture toxicity; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Bottom sediments around the world store large amounts of legacy hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), forming mixtures of unknown chemical composition. Primary emissions to the environment of many HOCs have been reduced as a consequence of regulation. LÄS MER
