  1. 1. The Role of RNA Binding Proteins in Insulin Messenger Stability and Translation

    Författare :Rikard G. Fred; Nils Welsh; Michele Solimena; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Although the reason for insufficient release of insulin in diabetes mellitus may vary depending on the type and stage of the disease, it is of vital importance that an amplified insulin biosynthesis can meet the increased need during periods of hyperglycemia. The insulin mRNA is highly abundant in beta cells and changes in insulin mRNA levels are, at least in part, controlled by altered rates of mRNA degradation. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria of the family Gemmataceae belong the phylum Planctomycetes and are remarkable because of their complex cellular architectures, previously considered to be traits exclusive to eukaryotes. This thesis provides clues to the atypical cell envelope, the enhanced radiotolerance and the amazing cellular complexity of these bacteria. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : A balanced tear film is essential for a healthy ocular surface. Insufficient tear production may result in dry eye, a common disorder in the elderly population. Dry eye causes significant discomfort in the patients and may lead to visual impairment and ocular infections. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Plant-Derived Substances and Cardiovascular Diseases : Effects of Flavonoids, Terpenes and Sterols on Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme and Nitric Oxide

    Författare :Ingrid Persson; Rolf G.G. Andersson; Lars Bohlin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Diet has for many years been known to play a key role in the development of chronic diseases. There are clear associations between consumption of vegetables, fruits and berries, and risk of cardiovascular diseases, the number one cause of death in the world. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Statins, Lipids, and Mutations: Consequences for the Heart and Immune System

    Författare :Emil G. Ivarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CAAX Proteins; Statins; RHO Proteins; Dilated Cardiomyopathy;

    Sammanfattning : CAAX proteins are a group of proteins that undergo a three-step protein maturation process that renders the proteins carboxyl-terminus hydrophobic and prone to localize to cellular membranes, where they have their primary function. The first step in this process is called prenylation, which is the covalent attachment of a lipid, either a 15-carbon farnesyl or a 20-carbon geranylgeranyl lipid, to the carboxyl-terminal cysteine residue by the enzymes farnesyltransferase (FTase) and geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase-I), respectively.
