  1. 16. Induction of a non-allergic inflammation in the human respiratory tract by organic dust

    Författare :Britt-Marie Larsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Swine farmers; airway inflammation; bronchial responsiveness; organic dust; interleukins; lekotrienes;

    Sammanfattning : Swine farming is an occupation associated with high exposure levels to organic dust, but gases such as ammonia and hydrogen sulphide are also contributing to the potentially hazardous exposure. The prevalences for respiratory symptoms, chronic or work-related, are increased among swine farmers, compared to both the normal population as well as other farming categories. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Clinical studies of asthma phenotypes focusing on the role of the leukotrienes

    Författare :Per Gyllfors; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :>asthma; aspirin intolerance; leukotrienes; leukotriene D4 responsiveness; methacholine responsiveness; exhaled nitric oxide;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammation in the airways in connection to asthma is a complex phenomenon and the mechanisms underlying the associated clinical symptoms involve the interaction of many different kinds of cells and mediators, giving rise to different phenotypes. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms that results in two of these phenotypes, i. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Quality of life and markers of inflammation : a study of asthma in primary care

    Författare :Per Olof Ehrs; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Mild Asthma; primary care; quality of life; airway inflammation; bronchial responsiveness; fluticasone.;

    Sammanfattning : Asthma is a chronic disease that usually is diagnosed and treated in primary care. Most patients have a mild to moderate disease. Asthma is considered to be caused by inflammation of the airways. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Effects of glucocorticoids or beta 2-agonists on inflammatory responses induced by organic dust in vitro and in vivo

    Författare :Alexandra Ek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Exposure of healthy subjects in a swine barn causes an acute inflammatory response in the airways and an increase in bronchial responsiveness to methacholine. The aim of this thesis was to study the mechanisms by which glucocorticoids or Beta2-agonists interfere with the inflammatory response following swine house dust-exposure both in vitro and in vivo. 5. 20. Studies of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction to define protective mechanisms in asthma

    Författare :Johan Bood; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) occurs in the majority of asthmatics following vigorous exercise. EIB is caused by a loss of water from the airways creating a hyperosmolar environment in the tissue that in turn triggers the release of bronchoconstrictive mediators. LÄS MER
