1. Verticillium longisporum and plant immunity responses in Arabidopsis
Sammanfattning : Verticillium spp. are soil-borne ascomycete fungi belonging to a subgroup of Sordariomycetes, and the three major plant pathogens Verticillium longisporum, V. dahliae and V. albo-atrum cause disease on numerous plant species worldwide. LÄS MER
2. Production of human heme-binding proteins in plants for potential pharmaceutical and nutritional uses
Sammanfattning : Plants have a long history as a source of nutrition and medication. In the last few decades, interest has also emerged in using plants as a production system for protein pharmaceuticals, in part due to possible scale-up- and safety-benefits with this method of production. LÄS MER
3. From Betterment to Bt maize : agricultural development and the introduction of genetically modified maize to South African smallholders
Sammanfattning : Agriculture has received renewed attention in poverty reduction efforts in Africa in recent years, and there are hopes that GM crops could have an important role in helping increase smallholder yields and reduce poverty. Drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA) and livelihoods perspectives, this thesis examines the ideas governing the Massive Food Production Programme (MFPP), an agricultural development programme aiming to reduce poverty by raising agricultural production in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, and its local effects when implemented in smallholder communities. 4. Function of MAP20 and MYB103 in cellulose and lignin formation of xylem secondary cell walls
Sammanfattning : Lignocellulose from trees and other crops will have tremendous impact on the next generation of sustainable biofuels and biomaterials. To take advantage of modern breeding tools, it is therefore important to understand the genetic and molecular regulation underlying secondary cell wall formation. LÄS MER
5. Discovery and investigation of glycoside hydrolase family 5 enzymes with potential use in biomass conversion
Sammanfattning : Glycoside hydrolases (GHs) cleave glycosidic bonds in glycoconjugates, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides such as cellulose and various hemicelluloses. Mannan is a major group of hemicelluloses. LÄS MER
