11. Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology in Central America and Sri Lanka : renal morphology and clinical characteristics
Sammanfattning : Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem. The most common etiologies of CKD are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and glomerulonephritis, but over the last several decades a high prevalence of CKD of unknown etiology (CKDu) has been reported from rural communities in some tropical countries, including Central America, and Sri Lanka. 12. Membranous Nephropathy - Challenges in diagnostics and treatment
Sammanfattning : The variability in the pathogenesis, clinical presentation and outcome of membranous nephropathy (MN) poses major clinical challenges and raises different questions, both regarding diagnostics and treatment of patients with MN. The aims of this thesis were therefore to examine: 1) differences in the glomerular expression of different IgG subclasses and phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) between patients with idiopathic and malignancy-associated MN; 2) treatment pattern of patients with idiopathic MN; and 3) if the serum PLA2R antibody level at diagnosis can be used as a prognostic marker. 13. Diabetic glomerulopathy-natural history, intervention and prediction of complications
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the threatening complications of diabetes that occurs in 30-40% of patients after 20 years duration of disease. LÄS MER
14. Studies on lupus nephritis
Sammanfattning : Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by multiple organ involvement, production of autoantibodies to nuclear components and local formation or deposition of immune complexes in different organs. Lupus nephritis (LN) is a common and severe manifestation of SLE. LÄS MER
15. Factors predicting progression of chronic kidney disease in IgA nephropathy
Sammanfattning : Glomerulonephritis (GN) is the main cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients on renal replacement therapy, with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) being the most frequent single diagnosis. Patients with reduced kidney function and/or proteinuria have an increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). LÄS MER
