11. Characterization of biological nanoparticles using evanescent field sensing
Sammanfattning : In light of the increasingly realized importance of nanoparticle-based biological processes, in biology as well as in technological applications, there is a need of analysis methods capable of accurately quantifying different characteristics and processes involving these elusive entities. The aim of this thesis is the development and utilization of surface-based bioanalytical sensing methods for quantitative characterization of biological nanoparticles, most of which being based on surface-confined evanescent-field illumination. 12. Benzene-char conversion and particle-vapor characterization in biomass gasification
Sammanfattning : Biomass is increasingly attracting attention as an alternative to fossil fuels. Gasification permits the thermochemical conversion of biomass into a product gas rich in carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The product gas can be further processed to generate heat, electricity, synthesis gas, chemicals, and biofuels. LÄS MER
13. Design, Characterization, and Calibration of Low-Noise Terahertz Receivers
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the field of instrumentation for radio-astronomy and atmospheric science, and specifically deals with problems such as optical design and its verification, horn antennas and receiver optics’ components, different aspects of measurement systems in order to characterize low-noise THz receivers, and its calibration techniques.Ultra low-noise Terahertz receivers, used in radio-astronomy, are typically coupled to the telescope system through relay optics that provides guiding of the signal to the receiver frontend with minimal loss. 14. Multiparametric Optical Characterization of Biological Nanoparticles using Evanescent Field Sensing
Sammanfattning : In light of the increasingly realized dependence of many biological functions on nanoscopic supramolecular assemblies, also including novel biotechnological applications, there is a need for advanced analysis methods capable of accurately quantifying different characteristics of these elusive entities. The prime aim of this thesis is the development and utilization of surface-based bioanalytical sensing methods for quantitative characterization of biological nanoparticles. LÄS MER
15. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals
Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles.
