6. The Amygdala, Fear and Reconsolidation : Neural and Behavioral Effects of Retrieval-Extinction in Fear Conditioning and Spider Phobia
Sammanfattning : The amygdala is crucially involved in the acquisition and retention of fear memories. Experimental research on fear conditioning has shown that memory retrieval shortly followed by pharmacological manipulations or extinction, thereby interfering with memory reconsolidation, decreases later fear expression. 7. p53 and cancer-associated fibroblasts : implications for cancer therapy and drug resistance
Sammanfattning : Drug resistance remains as a major problem and a daunting challenge to successful anticancer treatment. Cancer cells are masters of adaptation. Novel drugs that attack cancer in new ways and target key drivers of cancer cell growth are, therefore, urgently needed. LÄS MER
8. Immune monitoring in humans after manipulation by B cell depletion and immunization
Sammanfattning : The overall goal of this thesis was to study the influence of immunomodulatory drugs on the human immune system. The approach was bi-directional; ex vivo studies were performed after B cell depletion with rituximab treatment in patients with SLE and RA, and an in vivo assay was established to study effects of drugs on immune responsiveness. 9. Targeting dysfunctional developmental signaling cascades as a tool for tailored therapy in embryonal tumors
Sammanfattning : Neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma are embryonal malignant tumors of the central and peripheral nervous systems, respectively. The overall survival for both diagnoses is 60-75% despite intense multimodal therapy. This warrants the search for novel therapeutic approaches. LÄS MER
10. N-linked glycosylation of HIV-1 and Hantaan virus glycoproteins. Implications for vaccination and therapy
Sammanfattning : Enveloped viruses have a great advantage comparedto the non-enveloped viruses due to theirability to acquire not only a host membrane butalso host-specific glycosylation of their surfaceglycoproteins. These carbohydrate structures, mainly of the N-linked glycan class, have a lowimmunogenicity and this feature enables envelopedviruses to keep a low profile towards theimmune system by shielding crucial epitopesfrom antibody recognition.
