  1. 1. Modulation of the calcium-force relationship in smooth muscle by polyamines and metabolic inhibition

    Författare :Karl Swärd; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolic inhibition; polyamines; excitation-contraction coupling; smooth muscle; intracellular calcium; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The relationship between intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and force in smooth muscle was investigated in receptor-coupled permeabilized preparations and by fluorimetry of the calcium indicator Fura 2 in intact smooth muscle. The time integral of spontaneous [Ca2+]i transients in the intact rat portal vein was decreased by cyanide and, during tonic contraction, cyanide reduced force without changing [Ca2+]i implying metabolic sensitivity of both membrane excitation and [Ca2+]i - activation of the contractile proteins. 2. 2. A Continuum Framework for Modeling the Excitation–Contraction Coupling of Smooth Muscle

    Författare :Babak Sharifimajd; Jonas Stålhand; Anders Klarbring; Markus Böl; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Sammanfattning : Excitation-contraction coupling of smooth muscle refers to a chain of coupled physiological processes which convert a stimulus to a mechanical response. These processes can be disassociated into ionic transport during cell membrane excitation, activation of myosin light chains, and muscle contraction caused by actin-myosin interaction (filament sliding). 3. 3. Function of contractile and cytoskeletal proteins in smooth muscle: Effects of hypertrophy and age and desmin removal in a transgenic animal

    Författare :Rolf Sjuve; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transgenic mouse; desmin; embryonic myosin; isoforms; myosin heavy chain; age; smooth muscle; hypertrophy; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In man, the urinary bladder responds to an urinary outflow obstruction with a pronounced dilatation and growth of the bladder wall. This clinical situation can be mimicked in rat by creation of a partial urinary outflow obstruction and the papers included in the present thesis use this animal model to address questions regarding the adaptive changes in the smooth muscle of the growing bladder. 4. 4. Risk factors for autoimmune-mediated congenital heart block

    Författare :Sabrina Meisgen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Placental transfer of maternal Ro/SSA and La/SSB autoantibodies during pregnancy is associated with conduction disturbances and inflammation in the developing fetal heart, termed autoimmune-mediated congenital heart block (CHB). Maternal Ro/SSA and La/SSB autoantibodies are the main risk factors associated with the fetal cardiac manifestations to date, however, the low recurrence rate despite persisting autoantibodies in subsequent pregnancies indicates that additional factors determine fetal susceptibility. 5. 5. Cellular responses to respiratory chain dysfunction

    Författare :Anna Hansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Mitochondria; TFAM; cardiomyopathy; aging; reactive oxygen species ROS ;

    Sammanfattning : Mitochondria are network-like organelles present in most mammalian cells. They contain the respiratory chain (RC) that produces the majority of the energy needed in the cell, in the form of ATP. RC deficiency can arise due to mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or in nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins. LÄS MER
