16. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning
Sammanfattning : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 17. Characterization of neuropeptide, monoamine, and amino acid release in the basal ganglia of the rat : neuronal dependence and reciprocal interactions
Sammanfattning : Functional interactions in the basal ganglia of rats were characterized with in vivomicrodialysis. The study was mainly focused on the dynorphin and cholecystokinin (CCK) systems. The extracellular levels of both dynorphin B and CCK were found in the pM range inthe neostriatum and substantia nigra under basal conditions. LÄS MER
18. On natural and drug-induced reward : genetic, biochemical and behavioral comparisons
Sammanfattning : Work in this thesis compares natural and drug- induced reward at genetic, biochemical and behavioral levels with the objective to obtain information about key mechanisms underlying reward and addiction, and improve the understanding of compulsive elements that characterize addiction. Surveys among committed human runners have described running as addictive. LÄS MER
19. Behavioural and neurochemical effects and changes in gene expression in inflammatory and neuropathic pain
Sammanfattning : Chronic pain is a common clinical problem, which causes great suffering, and there is a great need for better analgesic drugs and strategies to counteract the transition of acute pain into chronic pain states. In studies of neurochemical mechanisms in animal models of chronic pain it is important to study also the development of spontaneous pain-related behaviour and sensory abnormalities (i. LÄS MER
20. Neuropeptide expression in mouse disease models
Sammanfattning : The role of neuropeptides and the significance of peptidergic mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases are still relatively unexplored. In the periphery, nerve injury results in dramatic changes in the expression of neuropeptides (and other molecules). LÄS MER
